Flowers of a Sicilian Spring

Flowers of a Sicilian Spring

The Madonie Mountains Natural Park, member of the UNESCO’s European and Global Geoparks network, is one of the most charming and authentic areas among the several rural regions of Sicily. With this itinerary, based on a fascinating historical mansion, now converted into an “agriturismo”, in the beautiful landscape of Polizzi Generosa, we want to offer to our guests the opportunity to get in touch with a real Sicily which is slowly disappearing. You will experience the culture and the local traditions, learn more about the mafia and the controversial history of present Sicily, visit beautiful medieval towns and some of the most amazing mountains of our island with their fantastic views of sea and countryside and enjoy all the local culinary delicacies including the old fashioned bread and pizza that all together we will prepare in a traditional old oven. The colourful flowers of our spring will be framing those days in the countryside.

Cefalu with its Norman cathedral is the real meeting point between the mountains and the coast.

After this rural life immersion, in two intense days you will experience the beautiful and bustling city of Palermo with its 3.000 years old history, its markets and night life, its monuments, bars, shops etc. The regional capital of Sicily is always full of surprises.

Cefalu, gate of the Madonie mountains is one of the most charming town in the whole island, where the presence of tourism has not effected real life and the traditional atmosphere of its elegant squares and streets. In the early afternoon we will move again to reach our agriturismo Feudo San Giorgio in Polizzi Generosa. After the check in we will meet for a short introduction, over an aperitivo, to the history, the language and the rural economy of Sicily. Dinner together at the agriturismo

Day 3

This day is entirely dedicated to discover the breathtaking landscapes of the Madonie Natural Park, its geology  and nature. We will walk together with a professional guide among oak and beech woods, we will see marine fossils embedded in the rocks of high mountains and enjoy a solid mountain meal together. In the afternoon a visit of the beautiful medieval town of Petralia will slowly take us down to our agriturismo where an informal pizza and bread baking class will conclude this long and intense day.

Day 4

Some people say that Castelbuono is the real capital city of the Madonie , some other say that is Petralia. On this forth day we will drive to Castelbuono to visit the most active and lively town of the Madonie mountains, its beautiful castle and its historical city centre.  We will host you in our summer house for a real Sicilian picnic. After lunch we will slowly move towards Isnello to discover this hidden little gem, sit in its pretty squares and walk around its cobblestone streets. Finally back to Feudo San Giorgio for another good dinner together.

Day 5

After a light walk directly from our agriturismo to meet a local shepherd and experience the preparation of fresh cheese and ricotta we will explore once again the territory of Madonie to visit places and meet people who will introduce us to the history of the local fight for the rights of farmers and against the mafia and to tell us about those people who fought and died in these hard political battles. Local associations, elderly farmers and young people are always keen to share with visitors their indirect and direct experience in this difficult aspect of the Sicilian history and society. This is a day to understand more about the mafia phenomenon that goes far beyond the stereotypes widespread by the film industry. Lunch and dinner will be wo other excuses to discover and enjoy more the local traditions and history.

Day 6

Today you will enjoy your last breakfast at Feudo Sangiorgio and then check out to travel back to Palermo where, after the check in and a little a siesta, we will meet our local guide for a guided tour around the city. Palermo is a 3000 years old city that has always been very important for the different populations that conquered and dominated Sicily through the centuries. By walking around its streets and by visiting its magnificent monuments you will be able to understand the importance of the city in the history and perhaps compare it with the less flourishing present. A charming city where you will be able to find your favourite spot for a good dinner and an enjoyable night life experience.

Day 7

Together with a Paesaggio Sicilia staff member you will visit the traditional and old market “u Capu” where colours, fruits, fish, spices and human voices underline once again the cultural melting pot that constitutes the real soul of Palermo and the whole Sicily. The rest of the day is yours to discover other parts of the city, try some local street food for your free lunch, shop in the most trendy streets or just relax sitting in a little bar and watching the crowd waves….
