Mellow Lights of September

Mellow Lights of September

Castelbuono, one of the most lively and joyful centres of Sicily, is a beautiful medieval town embedded in the North side of the Madonie Mountains Natural Park, member of the UNESCO’s European and Global Geoparks network. This is an area where the beauty of the landscapes is completed by the charm of several precious medieval villages.

With this tour, based on a fascinating 19th century castle, now converted into an “agriturismo”, few meters outside the centre of Castelbuono, we want to offer to our guests the possibility to live for some days an authentic and exciting experience in and around a town that with its mighty medieval castle and its lively squares and streets, lies in a valley between mountains and sea and it is therefore strategic to enjoy both aspects of the Sicilian landscapes. September is the time when we prepare our tomato sauce for the winter and we like to share this experience of real rural life with our guests.

Cefalu with its Norman cathedral is the perfect meeting point between the mountains and the coast.

After this rural life immersion, in two intense days you will experience the beautiful and bustling city of Palermo with its 3.000 years old history, its markets and night life, its monuments, bars, shops etc. The regional capital of Sicily is always full of surprises.

Day 2

After breakfast and check out we will head towards Cefalu for a guided tour of the city and its beautiful medieval centre with the mighty Norman cathedral. Cefalu, gate of the Madonie mountains is one of the most charming town in the whole island, where the presence of tourism has not effected real life and the traditional atmosphere of its elegant squares and streets. In the early afternoon we will move again to reach our accommodation in Castelbuono:  the 19th century castle Villa Levante. Over an aperitivo and a chat together with the owners you will be introduced to the history of the town, of the villa and you will taste the wine and the oil organically produced in Villa Levante. A walk around the lively town of Castelbuono and a dinner together will complete your second day with us.

Day 3

During this first morning in the Madonie Natural Park we will visit the town of Pollina, dramatically nested on a seven hundred meters high rock with a fantastic view on the Madonie mountains and the Aeolian islands. We will later visit an organic farm to enjoy a creative lunch and learn more about the manna production. The manna , obtained from the sap of the manna ash, was for many centuries the cause of a consistent economic growth and wealth for the area. After a siesta we will move to the village of Isnello, an hidden gem in the Madonie park where we will walk around to discover the history and the geology of this charming place. A good pizza together will conclude our day.

Day 4

September is when traditionally in Sicily we prepare a lot of tomato sauce and bottle it to guarantee to our families a consistent supply for the winter. During this day together we want to work with you to make the new tomato sauce. A morning together for shopping fresh ingredients in the local putie (Sicilian for food shop) in Castelbuono and cook the tomato sauce in our summer house just outside Castelbuono. After a light picnic you are free to visit the town and its castle, relax in the Villa Levante or just sleep a deserved siesta. We will meet again in the evening for a barbecue together and to try our freshly made sauce.

Day 5

This is a real mare-monti day (sea and mounts). In the morning we will drive down to the coast to swim in the beautiful waters of the Tyrrhenian sea. A relaxing morning with a light lunch or ice creams with the sea view. After a siesta we will drive to Piano Sempria (1,200mtrs above sea level) where we will stop at an historical alpine style hut. Here you are free to walk around, learn with us how to play traditional Sicilian card games or just relax and enjoy the fresh mountain air.  A robust mountain meal will complete our visit at the hut.

Day 6

Today you will enjoy your last breakfast at Villa Levante and then check out to travel back to Palermo where, after the check in and a little a siesta, we will meet our local guide for a guided tour around the city. Palermo is a 3000 years old city that has always been very important for the different populations that conquered and dominated Sicily through the centuries. By walking around its streets and by visiting its magnificent monuments you will be able to understand the importance of the city in the history and perhaps compare it with the less flourishing present. A charming city where you will be able to find your favourite spot for a good dinner and an enjoyable night life experience.

Day 7

Together with a Paesaggio Sicilia staff member you will visit the traditional and old market “u Capu” where colours, fruits, fish, spices and human voices underline once again the cultural melting pot that constitutes the real soul of Palermo and the whole Sicily. The rest of the day is yours to discover other parts of the city, try some local street food for your free lunch, shop in the most trendy streets or just relax sitting in a little bar and watching the crowd waves….

Our last dinner together will be in a beautiful and many times awarded enoteca (wine bar) where you will have a panoramic tasting of different Sicilian wines coming from the best wine areas of the region.
