From Marsala to the Aeolian islands: wines, history and blue sea

From the exotic Western wine areas of Marsala, where grapes ripen exposed to the warm scirocco wind blowing from Sahara to the lush and relaxing volcanic Aeolian Islands, an UNESCO Heritage site, to discover the beautiful DOC areas of the North coast of Sicily.

During this tour you will visit selected wineries and try their exceptional DOC Malvasia delle Lipari, DOC Marsala together with red and white wines made with autochthonous grape varieties such as pignatello, grillo or corinto nero. You will cook cuscus, traditional dish for special days in the province of Trapani, swim in the blue sea of Salina and discover the beautiful and bustling city of Palermo and its UNESCO world heritage listed city centre.

The friendly and relaxing hospitality of a “baglio”, a rural accommodation and excellent winery near Marsala and the elegant and sober charm of a boutique hotel and spa in Salina will add a complementary beauty to this tour.

Day 1

After check in there will be time to discuss the programme, wander around the vineyards, swim in the hotel pool with a breathe-taking view of  the Stagnone islands near Marsala or indulge with a glass of Donna Franca wine before enjoying the first traditional Sicilian dinner. Giacomo Ansaldi, the owner of the estate is an oenologist with a great passion for native grapes and the history of Marsala wines and he will offer you the privilege of a visit to his special and exclusive cellar of “perpetuo” wines, collected to save the memory of the old traditions.

Day 2

Just after breakfast, you will visit the farm and put your hands into the durum wheat flour to prepare the traditional cuscus, typical dish for all special days in Trapani area, strong connection with the Southern coasts of the Mediterranean.

After lunch, we will move to a small and charming winery in the territory of Marsala: their Marsala DOC wines, wisely aged following the soleras method, are probably the best examples of this style and beside them you will also be able to try their excellent white, red and sparkling wines.

Before going back to dinner in your “Baglio”, we will stop for a walk and an aperitivo at the salt pans of Marsala, where you can see active windmills and understand more about the sea salt production.

Day 3

A wine tour of Marsala is not complete without paying a visit to one of the huge cellars that, from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 20thcentury, have made Marsala wines famous all around the world. We will visit the astonishing cellars of the Florio wineries where more than 5 million litres of Marsala wine age in gigantic barrels. We will then move to the elegant city centre of Marsala, visit the fish market and grab some local street food from some of the many little food shops and bars situated in the lively cobbled stone streets.

Erice, nested on its 717 metres high mount, with its medieval streets, monasteries, churches and traditional confectioneries is the second stop of our journey across the province of Trapani. You will have time to stroll around, try the renowned local cakes and enjoy the beautiful views of the city of Trapani, the salt pans landscape and the Aegadian islands.

An informal and surprisingly good pizza in Trapani will close this very long day.

Day 4

On this forth day we will visit the amazing temple of Segesta, one of the best preserved temple in the Greek world.

After the visit we will enjoy a great bbq and a wine tasting in a beautiful family run organic winery lost in the rolling hils of Fulgatore

Back to the Baglio Donna Franca there will be still time for a short swim in the pool before another good dinner with Western Sicilian specialities.

Day 5

After check out we will move towards the harbour of Milazzo to take the ferry to greenest of the seven Aeolian sister islands: Salina.

To make the journey more agreeable we will stop in the beautiful town of Cefalu where you will have time to visit the Norman Cathedral, the old medieval streets and grab some delicious local food.

Once in Salina we will check in at hotel Signum in the fascinating village of Malfa, core of the wine production of the island. Here you can stroll around and try your first glass of Malvasia delle Lipari DOC, before dining with the recipes of the Michelin starred chef Martina Caruso, daughter of the owners of hotel Signum.

Day 6 - Day 7

In the next two days we will visit the little villages of Santa Marina and Rinella, try the local cappers and dried tomatoes and stop in some of the small wineries to try their excellent Malvasia DOC, the dry white wine made from malvasia grapes or the elegant red made from nerello mascalese and corinto nero grapes. The rest of the time will be for you to relax in the hotel spa and pool, swim in the sea, discover the island with its lush vegetation and vineyards or just sit in a bar terrace and enjoy the “dolce far niente” of the island. We will have dinners all together in a beautiful agriturismo in the village of Pollara and in a cosy pizzeria in Malfa.

Day 8

After checking out we will take the ferry to go back to Sicily mainland. With recharged batteries, after these two slow and relaxing days in Salina, you will be ready to jump into the bustling atmosphere of the capital city of Sicily: Palermo.

You will first check at your hotel in the city centre and afterwards we will all move for a wine tasting and light dinner at the Enoteca Picone. This is a beautiful and many times awarded wine bar and shop where you will have a panoramic tasting of different excellent Sicilian DOC wines coming from the areas that you do not cross during the tour (Etna, Noto, Vittoria).

Day 9

Today you will meet your guide to visit the city centre of Palermo, its monuments and traditional markets and stop in a “friggitoria” to try the famous Palermitan street food. The rest of the day is for you before we all meet again for a farewell dinner together.

After breakfast, we will say goodbye.
